a note from Will:

Dear Friends:

"I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all I need for an act of theatre to be engaged."

Those words, from Peter Brook's landmark book The Empty Space, are among the most quoted in contemporary theatre. The 'empty space' concept was a wake up call for theatre-makers, and now 40 years later, the revolution continues. I can remember the very moment I read those lines as a 19 year old student and suddenly, everything I thought about theatre changed. My eyes and mind opened to new possibilities and I have been exploring the empty space ever since.

This concept was central to the founding of Bakerloo Theatre Project (and, frankly, many companies like us). We believe that Shakespeare and the great language plays are most vibrant when removed from the trap of a traditional stage and placed in new and unexpected terrain. We take that exploration to an entirely new level this summer with our residency at 291 River Street, in downtown Troy. We are converting this empty space--an unused storefront, once an architecture firm--into our home for the summer. In this space, we will take you to Verona and Wales, Pittsburgh and New York City, and at times remain right there in Troy. In this space we will bring you the greatest love story ever written--a story we all know told in a fresh new way. In this space, we will also bring the words of one of 20th century's greatest poets to life, as well as rework the novels of one of history's most popular writers in a decidedly contemporary fashion. In one room, together, downtown, we will share these great stories and then, when it is all over, we will leave and the space will be empty once again.

I hope you will join us this summer for William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood, running from July 11th to July 24th in repertory. Before that, please stop by to see our new play cycle, Jane Austen City Limits, written by Josh Levine, Maureen McGranaghan and Patrick Shaw, on June 25th and 26th.

Sincerely,
Will
