Bakerloo Theatre Project was founded to provide emerging theatre artists the opportunity to work on the greatest plays in the dramatic canon. As the company progressed, an aesthetic of intelligent, risk-taking production emerged as the Bakerloo hallmark. Today, Bakerloo is known for its unique ability to provide a new platform for understanding classic plays, while still respecting the intensions of the original text.
The center piece of the Bakerloo year is the summer repertory season. Bakerloo Theatre Project has provided over 100 emerging theatre artists from across the country and around the world with the opportunity to work with extraordinary plays in a focused, intensive setting. Since 2005, Bakerloo summer projects have been based on Troy, NY, transforming a non-traditional empty space into our mainstage. Bakerloo is proud to be part of the artistic tradition of the city of Troy. Audiences looking for intelligent, athletic and literate productions appreciate Bakerloo’s style. The Albany Times-Union has twice named Bakerloo one of the best theatre companies in the Capital Region. |
Along with its Main Stage productions, Bakerloo’s summer season features play readings, youth theatre workshops, seminars, and discussions. Following certain performances, audiences are invited to join the company in the campus pub to discuss the plays and each year Bakerloo sponsors a cookout for the community known as “Shakespeare in the Pork”.
In addition to working with the classics, Bakerloo has offered emerging playwrights the opportunity to develop their works, including Josh Levine, Adam Mathias, Maureen McGranaghan, Joe Mihalchick, Patrick Shaw, Cory Tamler and Valerie Work. Bakerloo has produced world premiere adaptations of Antigone, Hamlet: What Dreams May Come and The Imaginary Invalid, as well as the original works The Story Project and Jane Austen City Limits. Both Imaginary Invalid and Hamlet: What Dreams May Come were named among the best productions of the decade list by the North Adams Transcript. Bakerloo has spread out beyond Troy as well. A growing presence in the flourishing arts community of Pittsburgh, Bakerloo has presented a variety of readings and workshops in the city and in 2010 transferred the acclaimed production of Under Milkwood from Troy to Pittsburgh's Future Tenant Art Space for a sold-out run. In New York City, Bakerloo has presented Hamlet: What Dreams May Come and Jane Austen City Limits. In 2009, Bakerloo produced a production of The Three Sisters at various locations in New York. Since 2000, Bakerloo has regularly produced readings of classic and new plays in New York as well. |

The Albany Times Union said, "The best thing about Bakerloo's production is that it neither merely interprets Shakespeare's dialogue nor tries to reinterpret it, but rather builds on the wonderful foundation of the playwright's words." Bakerloo hopes to continue to build on the words of Shakespeare and other exceptional playwrights for years to come.
